Top Tips for keeping fit on the road!

Eastbourne is hosting a whole summer of sporting events and The Grand will be welcoming some of the top international athletes who are going to be taking part.

It's not easy keeping in shape while you're travelling and staying in hotels, so our health club manager Chris Butler has put together his top tios to avoid your training and diet being de-railed while making the most of your hotel break.

High intensity training

If time is short or you only a gym to work with so you can't do any long running, cycling or swimming, high intensity training or interval training can be ideal.  Working hard for short sharp burst with a small amount of rest is time efficient and a very effective way to maintain your fitness.

Make use of your surroundings

Research where you are going to be staying and see what is has to offer.  Around the Grand we have the beautiful South Downs which is fantastic for running and cycling, and of course we're right on the seafront so you can practice your swimming in the sea!

Mind your nutrition

When you're not in your own home it is all too easy to snack and eat badly.  While on the road or staying in a hotel, try and avoid the easy options such as crisps, chocolate and biscuits.  When ordering in a hotel restaurant try and pick the healthiest option, but don't be afraid to ask if you have special requests.  At the Grand, with prior knowledge we will do our upmost to cater to your dietary requirements soif you let us know in advance we can tailor the menu to your needs.

Core and flexibility

Core exercises and stretching can often get missed out of people's workouts and if you've been travelling for long periods of time you can start to feel tight and stiff.  Take advantage of not being at home with your normal distractions to work your core and do some stretching.  You only need a little amount of space and you'll feel much better for it.

Make the most of your accommodation

Always be sure to see what the hotel offers - and I'm not talking about the bar!  At The Grand you can make use of the gym, inside and outside swimming pools, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi as well as a full range of spa treatments to help with pre-race training and post-race recovery.

Stay hydrated

It's always underestimated, but staying hydrated is vital to all aspects of daily function and even more so when exercising or entering an event, so make sure you're getting plenty of fluids throughout the day.
