2025 marks a remarkable milestone for us at The Grand Hotel, as we celebrate 150 years since the construction of the hotel. That's a century and a half of unparalleled luxury, timeless elegance, and exceptional service. Since first opening the doors in 1875, The Grand Hotel has been more than just a place to stay - it has been a witness to history, a haven for world travellers, and a symbol of Eastbourne's very best.
A Glimpse Into History
William Earp proposed the building of a 'magnificent hotel' in 1874, and a year later the White Palace stood on Eastbourne's seafront. It quickly became the ultimate location for the upper classes to enjoy holidays by the sea, often for months at a time.
Our Great Hall has been resident to many musical broadcasts, including performances by Debussy and live orchestras on the BBC.
During the Second World War, the hotel's location was easy prey to air raids, forcing its closure and overtaking it to become a military headquarters. However, since 1965, we have been welcoming guests again to enjoy the classic Grand experiences.
Architectural Marvel
Affectionately known as The White Palace, the striking building certainly marks its place along a busy promenade. The blend of classic and contemporary styles seamlessly integrates its Victorian roots with modern innovations. The iconic facade, with its intricate detailing and grand entrance, remains a testament to 19th-century craftsmanship. Inside, the hotel has undergone thoughtful renovations to preserve its historical charm while offering state-of-the-art amenities.
Marking 150 Years
We have an array of activities planned throughout 2025 to help mark the occasion. From celebratory dinners that take you back in time to special overnight accommodation deals. We will begin to announce these later this month, so ensure to keep an eye on our social media pages to stay up to date!
