WINNERS:

Year 7/8 - Hilly Chatenoud, Bishop Bell CE School
Year 9/10 - Jessica Lane, Bishop Bell CE School

Students from Willingdon, The Eastbourne Academy, Ratton, Bishop Bell and Cavendish schools competed at the 2016 Eastbourne Young Chef finals at Willingdon Community School on Thursday 23rd June.

The competition, now in its 21st year, was organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership in conjunction with The Grand Hotel.  The finalists, who each had to design a 3 - course menu, based on a 'British/European' theme to coincide with 'the vote' the same day, had ninety minutes in which to prepare their main dish for judging.

'What another great year for our young chefs.  We were treated to more freshly made pasta and breads, duck for the first time, and, coincidently both winning dishes by students from Bishop Bell.  The quality of entries was extremely high making the job of the judges a challenge in itself but also very enjoyable', commented Keith Mitchell, Executive Chef at The Grand Hotel, who supervised the judging.

Allison Brachtvogel, representing the Eastbourne Hospitality Association and Mark Fagan, Fellow, representing the Institute of Hospitality, whose organisations had both sponsored the event, assisted Keith with judging.  Tesco Stores, who had very kindly donated special prizes for the two category winners, were also represented.

Mentor chefs from Sussex Downs College, The View Hotel, Langham Hotel and Lansdowne Hotel had previously supported the schools during their individual school heats.  This added a work-related dimension to the competition and provided additional support for the students and their teachers.

The two category winners, Holly (Years 7/8) and Jessica (Years 9/10), both received a special cup, prizes and lunch at the Grand Hotel.  The remaining finalists each received a certificate and prizes 'in recognition of achievement'

Congratulations to both winners.... very well deserved
