Since its construction in 1875, The Grand Hotel has stood as a symbol of luxury in Eastbourne. Today, when you visit, you can feel the history in the building, with images and room names honouring its rich past. We've explored the archives to share historical moments from The Grand, and we hope you enjoy comparing these spaces to their present-day counterparts.
In our header image, you might spot the tennis court in the bottom left corner. The court was once regularly used by tennis legends Fred Perry and Bunny Austin to prepare for Wimbledon. Its removal sparked local interest, but since its opening in May 1963, The Grand’s outdoor pool has offered a serene escape for visitors to the seaside. The photograph of the pool is one taken to promote the new facility available.
The next image captures The Great Hall during one of its famed broadcast evenings. From 1924 to 1939, the Grand Hotel Orchestra performed live from the hall on the BBC’s “Grand Hotel” program every Sunday night. We continue this musical tradition today with our Palm Court Strings Afternoon Teas, held periodically in the same elegant setting.
While the White Palace still dominates the shoreline in all its grandeur, the most noticeable changes have occurred around the hotel, particularly in the modes of guest transport! Except during World War II, when Eastbourne faced air raids and The Grand was converted into a military headquarters, the hotel has continuously welcomed guests since its opening. It was fully restored to its original purpose in 1965.
It’s fascinating to reflect on how The Grand has evolved over the past 150 years, and we can’t wait to see what the next 150 will bring!
